Georgetown Cupcake Soho

Instead of catching up on sleep, going to the gym or relaxing with some high quality daytime TV on my day off, I went cupcake hunting! Georgetown Cupcake has been in NYC for a little more than a month, and since I was a big fan of these cakes when I first tasted them in DC, I’ve been eager to check out their new Soho location.

Cupcake menu

Similar to DC, the NYC store is pretty in pink and stocked with cake stands full of beautifully frosted cupcakes. The store itself is huge, with a few tables and chairs (and this bedazzled fuchsia kitchen Aid mixer!).

The cupcake menu is just as extensive as the DC location, and included several seasonal specials of the day (my visit was on a Wednesday).  It was tough to bring home just a few cupcakes.  Since I’d already tried the basic vanilla, chocolate and red velvet cupcakes (see earlier post here, I opted for their seasonal specials which included an Irish Cream (non-alchoholic), Cherry Blossom and Raspberry Lemon.

As I remembered, the cakes were delighted moist, with simple flavor combinations. The Cherry Blossom Cupcake had cherries baked in the cake and was topped with a cute blossom flower. The Raspberry Lemon was a nice light and refreshing reminder of summer flavors.

It’s a great addition to the NYC cupcake scene and definitely worth checking out!

P.S. – Love the cupcake art…

Macaron day!

My attempt at making macarons - almond with chocolate ganache

It’s not just an ordinary Tuesday, it’s Macaron Day in NYC!

Macaron Day is inspired by the Jour du Macaron in Paris, created by two fantastic shops – la Maison Pierre Hermé and Relais Desserts.

While we won’t be able to hop across the pond and taste French confections from those shops, dozens of NYC macaron shops have banded together to offer New Yorkers a taste of France, for free.

Click here to view a list of participating bakeries and plan your macaron crawl. Don’t forget to mention you are there for Macaron Day 2012.

If you’d like to celebrate this glorious day by making these delicate confections at home, check out my how to guide.

Happy munching!
